Discussion groups
Previous Subject   Exit Help   Next Subject

Discussion groups are forums where messages and responses can be posted for all to read. Anybody--registered with CSN or not--can read discussion group messages. However, to contribute to discussions, registration is required.

To access discussion groups;

  • Select "Discussions and Chat" from the left-side CSN navigation menu, then pick from the list.
  • OR You can select "Participate in a Discussion" from the Connect and Communicate menu in the top center area of Your CSN Start Page
  • OR click the direct link to a particular discussion listed on Your CSN Start Page.

If you are a registered user, you may participate in any discussion group. Here are some tips on participating:

  • When you Add a discussion group, the group will appear with a link on Your CSN Start Page, along with the total number of messages in each particular group. You may Add as many groups as you wish. When you click "Remove," the listing is removed from Your CSN Start Page.
  • To read a message within a discussion group, click on the message title.
  • Below each message are six quick-action icons:
email author add author to contact list remove author from contact list stop watching for replies to this message watch for replies to this message delete this message

  • Use these icons to perform these functions as they pertain to that particular user/message.
  • The trash can only appears on your own messages. You can use this to delete your own messages.
  • Watching any messages means that you will be notified in your regular email box if any responses are posted to that particular message.
  • You can jump to the previous or next message by selecting "prev" or "next" at the bottom of any message.
  • At the bottom of each discussion page, there is a Keyword Search for searching among discussions only, and a Go button for jumping to another discussion board.

Discussion Viewing and Reading Choices:

  • At the top of each discussion group page you have choices on the way you view the messages. You can choose the number of messages per page, the order by date, and the layout view.
  • The summary view is the default. This gives you each original message, the date, the contributor, and the number of replies.
  • The subject only view gives you the subject line only of all messages, both original and replies, along with the contributors and dates.
  • The full view gives you all the messages, original and replies, completely open and to read.
  • Replies are indented and colored at each level. So all original messages are the same color, all first-level replies the same color, all second-level replies the same color, etc.
  • Only the dates of the original messages are used for ordering.

To add or remove a discussion board link to Your CSN Start Page:

  • Log in to CSN.
  • Click "Discussions and Chat" from the left-side menu located throughout CSN.
  • To the right of each group, there are Add and Remove links. Click these links, and your page will change accordingly and update your list on Your CSN Start Page.

To reply to a message within a discussion:

  • Select "Reply" next to the message title.
  • On the Send a Message form, enter your comment into the Message field.
  • Select "Preview" to see your completed message before it is posted.
  • To submit your message, select "Post it!"
  • To revise your message, select "Re-edit".
  • When you select "Post it!" the message will be sent to the discussion group.

To post a new message to a discussion group:

  • Click the "Post a New Message" link at the top of the discussion group page.
  • On the Send a Message form, enter a subject into the Subject field and your comment into the Message field.
  • Select "Preview" to see your completed message before it is posted.
  • To submit your message, select "Post it!"
  • To revise your message, select "Re-edit".
  • When you select "Post it!" the message will be sent to the discussion group.
  • If you have further questions about CSN discussion groups, please contact: webmaster@acscsn.org.
